Cheryl is a Pilates instructor who works out of our Glenmore location. She teaches group Pilates classes, private Pilates, semi private Pilates, and our physio lead active rehab sessions. Cheryl has worked at NeuMovement as a Pilates instructor for four and a half years. We asked Cheryl some questions so you can get to know her better!
How long have you worked at NeuMovement? What is your favourite part about working here?
I've been working at NeuMovement for almost 4 and a half years, although I was a client long before that! My favourite part about working at NeuMovement would have to be the connections I've built with my coworkers and clients. Friendly faces, good conversations and teaching movement to people help fill up my cup!
What made you want to become a Pilates instructor?
I had been a Neu client for a couple of years when a previous instructor/mentor of mine suggested I consider the teacher training course that was coming up. I knew I loved everything about Pilates, and I understood the healing and strengthening powers the movement held, but I had never considered teaching. After some thought I decided to take the leap and registered for the training course shortly afterwards, completing Anatomy and Mat, as well as Reformer pilates training. After many hours of observation and practice teaching, I completed my exams and became certified. After teaching for a few months, I went on to complete additional training modules: Springwall, Tower, Cadillac, Chair, Barrels as well as a fascia release training.
Who do you look up to in your life or career and why?
Such a hard question, because I look up to so many people. But if I had to pick just one, I'd choose my son. We received his autism diagnosis at 2 years old, and he has had to work so much harder than most for similar opportunities. Even through his challenges, he continues to show up and do the hard work. We are fortunate to partner with wonderful professionals who challenge him and help him build confidence, and we have an extremely supportive group of family and close friends. And for every person that has said he can't and won't, he IS and will continue to exceed everyone's expectations.
What makes you laugh?
Laughter is my medicine! Of course, there is a time and place, but being too serious makes me uncomfortable. And if you're laughing, so am I. It's contagious, and the more awkward the situation, the better! What can people expect from a Pilates session with you?
Pilates sessions with me are bespoke to the person in front of me: your personal goals and how you're feeling that day. Whether you're dealing with a flare up of a previous injury, or mentally not having a great day, or maybe you're feeling extra energetic and strong...we will make it work. Your sessions are tailored specifically for you, and I will push you when I can, and hang back when you need me to. It's important to me that we build a healthy level of trust so that we can move forward and become stronger together.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would LOVE to travel to Japan. The people, the food, the culture...everything about Japan fascinates me, and I know I will get there someday!
What is something people may not know about you?
Most people don't know that I have a business degree. I graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in human resources. And although I'm grateful for the knowledge and experience gained, ultimately that line of work was not for me (see answer #4). I've also moved around Canada a lot since graduating from university. During and after my husband's schooling, he was stationed at numerous airport towers across the country: Moncton, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and lastly Kelowna. What in your life do you feel most grateful for?
I'm most grateful for my family and friends. I couldn't imagine doing life without these wonderful people, and the support they provide to me, my husband and our son. And I can't possibly forget about my two Portuguese water dogs George and Josie, who add just the right amount of craziness and love to my day :)
