How To Stay Active In Winter

Winter can be a difficult time to stay active. With the shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures it’s easy to feel like all you want to do is binge watch your favourite tv show. However, staying active is a great way to support your mental and physical health. Physical activity can help improve your heart health, energy levels, and sleep, with many other advantages. Plus, you don’t need to spend a lot of time to reap the rewards of staying active.

Start by going on a walk outside. This could be in your neighbourhood, in a park, or on your most loved trail. Doing this during the day can assist with getting more sunlight and support your circadian rhythm. Be sure to bundle up to stay warm so your time can be enjoyable!

If it’s too cold outside for your liking, consider doing a workout online. There is an array of free workout classes that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home. And if that’s not an option for you, try cleaning the house. Before you stop reading this all together with a suggestion like that, vacuuming, dusting, mopping are all physically demanding and as an added bonus your house will be free of dust and dirt!

Dabble in a few outdoor sports. If you have the benefit of going skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing utilize the great outdoors. Since we usually spend much more time inside during the winter, winter sports are a pleasant way to get outside.

Another option is to come into one of our studios to keep warm and do our pilates sessions! Pilates is known to improve flexibility, increase strength, and enhance body awareness. Ask a friend to go with you to keep yourself accountable. Or join one of our group classes starting in the new year! All of our pilates instructors are experienced and will support you wherever you are in your ability.

One of the most important thing is to find your reason why you want to stay active. Discover movement that feels good for you, listen to your body, and take it one step at a time. Something that you find enjoyable will be the best thing so you can continue on your staying active journey!
